After Daddy Issues last week, we got a little bit of deeper backstory into Jack Shepard’s messed up life prior to falling into the middle of a cane field. This week we’re gonna get a deeper look into the messy life of Kate “Katie” “Freckles” Austen, I’m pretty sure there won’t be any prep school [...]

Well now that we’ve got the first 8 hours of LOST under our belt, it’s time to explore a bit outside of the beach and the caves. It’s a large island with lots of mysteries, but our survivors have pretty much stayed put on the beach, with a couple of exploratory expeditions to the cockpit [...]

As you all know there is no new season of LOST to promote at ComicCon, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a LOST presence at ComicCon (although, sadly, there is no @LOST_boss presence at ComicCon) 2010. Several of our regular staff members are going and visiting the different LOST displays, as well as taking in the whole ComicCon experience with Previews and Panels and Participants, Oh MY!

So while this modern mecca of media that has helped make geek chic is going on, we that are stuck at home can live vicariously through those that are posting from the San Diego Convention Center… These are their stories.

Standby for more updates through the weekend of the Con.

If Last week’s episode, The Moth, provided a template for the series long theme of redemption and recovery, this weeks episode Confidence Man provides a template of the concept of the con man’s game.

John Locke is one of the most complex characters written, and portrayed in LOST. To me his story is as much a part of the show as the character of Jack Shephard. Do you think he is Evil?

One of the things that became apparent when I rewatched LOST last summer is that John Locke is a series of shadows and blurry lines. I remember from watching the first time through that John Locke appeared to be a hero, the man of faith, the man that could help people with their struggles, provide that single nugget of advice that could help people advance. On rewatching after season 5, my initial thoughts changed slightly, knowing after “Further Instructions” that the one consistent character trait of John Locke is per the FBI profiles is that he is amenable to corecion. After the season 5 finale, we’re clued into the fact that this flawed John Locke is still dead in the sand, not alive on the island, and so we’re left to speculate on the character of John Locke.

Some might project that John Locke on the island was never really John Locke, that he died in that first boar hunt, and his persona was taken over by the man in black at that moment, and immediately began plotting his devious long con. Another group of people may consider that John Locke came under the influence of the MiB after that first glorious appearing, and while coerced and manipulated still made choices consistent with John Locke’s oter character traits. But is he evil? I say no.

The best description of John Locke, and indeed all of the Oceanic Survivors, and other groups of others on the island is given by Jacob in “What they died for”:

SAWYER: … I was doin’ just fine til you dragged my ass to this damn rock. JACOB: No, you weren’t. None of you were. I didn’t pluck any of you out of a happy existence. You were all flawed. I chose you because you were like me. You were all alone. You were all looking for something that you couldn’t find out there. I chose you because you needed this place as much as it needed you.

This entry is part 13 of 13 in the series Pre-Hash by Jon

Last week’s rewatches and podcasts we’re lots of fun, lots of people joining in the chatrooms and listening to the podcast.  Thank goodness Neil should be back this week, to keep the podcast more on track!

We’re gonna pre-hash Walkabout this week, and I know for me this was the episode that hooked me.  The pilot was interesting, the story in Tabula Rasa was fascinating, but then Walkabout set the hook, and LOST had me reeling for years.

“We hunt!” – John Locke

So, what I want to do, is ask all you all everybody, what you remember about your thoughts were about the episode the first time you watched it.  What do you remember thinking the first time you saw John Locke’s toe twitch while he was lying in the sand.  What were your impressions about our characters at this point in the show?  Who were you rooting for? who made you mad?  What mysteries had you scratching your head?

When you watch Walkabout this week, I have a little assignment for you.  Look for clues of John Locke’s paralysis before the final wheelchair reveal.  Come back and leave a comment about what you now realize was a secret even though it was right there in plain site.  This exercise helps as we continue on, because the writers and producers love to leave us hints along the way.  Sure, some are red herrings, but many are good clues to the story.

Another assignment as we move along, is what extracurricular theories start sprouting in your mind. Like, Jack said in Tabula Rasa, “Three days ago we all died …”  Many people started down the road of Island as Purgatory based on that line, and what they caught with other clues.  Do you remember your early theories of the island.

I’ll catch you in the comments, and in the chatrooms for the rewatches.  Check out the Calendar for dates and times.

This entry is part 3 of 6 in the series WTAL Season 1

LOST_WTAL Week two of the rewatch is underway, and this week we’re tackling Tabula Rasa.  Our trusty host Neil is down with a bug, so he’s asked me to step in and take the podcast.  Which I’m glad to do, except I’m going to have to push it back 25 hours.  So we’re gonna kick it off on Thursday at 10PM CDT on TalkShoe.  But y’all have a homework assignment.  Ask some questions in the comments.  Make some observations in the comments. Or best yet, agree to join in the podcast as a panelist, and you get to talk to ME.  I really don’t see any downside to any of those things.

We’ll also take sometime to talk about the growing LOSTblog Community and the different things going on on the blog.  With chats, bookclubs and podcasts, this place we made together is becoming THE place to rewatch, reread and relate.

Your turn.  Comments are ON!

So last weeks rewatch of both part of the LOST Pilot was a lot of fun.  Great participation on both during the Tuesday night CoverItLive slot, and the Saturday morning chatroom timeslot.  In fact we have chatters on Saturday morning, from the UK to Sydney, Australia, so if you do the math, we had people from 8AM Saturday morning to 1AM Sunday morning local, all watching LOST together in our chatroom. That’s pretty amazing.

So let’s prehash the next episode, our rewatch, start with “re” so a not a whole lotta first timers, so I’m prehashing some highlights from the pilot, and remembering where everyone one was, so that people that might be joining in on a re-watch will be caught up.  Not much theorizing, except maybe in the margins where the story didn’t provide pat answers, but there are lots of grey areas where we can discuss different angles.

So we had a plane break apart and crash on an island.  Forty some people survived the crash and are living on a beach, with small hope of any rescue efforts, since some passengers; Kate, Jack and Charlie visited with the pilot in the cockpit in the middle of the jungle where the nose section landed and found out they were flying off their flight path.  Before the pilot got jacked out of the cockpit by some unseen dark force, Jack got a hold of a radio transceiver, and brought it back to the camp.

The camp has a few people in it, let’s call an unofficial role, since no one has a flight manifest… yet.

One of the great things about doing a re-watch, is that we can connect with people across the ponds. In this case, by planning a re-watch time for Saturday 10AM morning in Dallas of the U.S. of A., we can connect with people in Europe during their Saturday evening (4PM GMT I think). Or just after midnight in Sydney, Austraila… sorry blokes.

At any rate, We’ll kick of the weekend re-watch (during Saturday morning cartoon time for West Coasters 8AM – grab your coffee) at 10AM CDT in the LOSTblog ReWatch Chatroom.
