Scott

I am the Pastor of North Fork Baptist Church in Virgilina, VA. I am married to my high school sweetheart, Nikki, and have three amazing kids. I love LOST and really enjoy examining all of the faith/philosophy angles of the show. So, are you Team Locke or Team Jack?

I have written a book review for Nightmare by fellow LOSTie Robin Parrish (@robinparrish) of LOSTexplained. You can find my review here.

I’m not going to talk about any specific character or episode or plot line. I am surely not going to discuss shippers (see my tweets with @brunablack tonight, that’s about as much as you’re gonna get). I wanted to give a few personal thoughts as we are about two months removed from the series finale.

About halfway through Season 6, I also began rewatching the entire series from Season 1 with my 11 year old daughter, Susie. I didn’t know if she would be hooked or not, but a couple of weeks ago, we finished Season 6 together. Her computer wallpaper now consists of a picture of Desmond (her favorite character). Her favorite season was Season 5 (and she has almost talked me into it) and she cried at the finale (but not as much as she did when Charlie died).

I do not believe that there will ever be another show like LOST. Not only did LOST entertain me and my daughter, but it opened up some pretty serious discussion about real life issues. Wasn’t that what LOST ultimately ended up being about, people who are on the journey of doing life together? As a pastor, I spend my life trying to help a community of people do life together. As a husband and father, I desire to see my family do life together. I think this was one of LOST’s greatest appeals.

As my other two children get older, I look forward to watching LOST again and again. I also look forward to continuing the friendships that I never would have made if not for LOST, the #LOST #WFTB tweet ups, and LOSTblog.com. I feel like I have a whole new group of people to learn how to do life together.

Live together, die alone (notice the “do life together” theme!)

Thanks to Pastor Chris Seay (@PastorChrisSeay on twitter) for this week’s heartfelt video blog.

“One is dark, one is light.”

OK, so I was thinking about my earlier post today and realized that I may have left you, the reader, in a bit of a dark place. I mean, sure, evil is real; sure, bad things happen, but there is always hope…right? Right? Of course there is. Another tenet of the Christian faith (which I am an adherent and LOST draws analogies from) is the fact that even though the world has a present evil (the Bible even calls Satan “the god of this world”) there is a very good and all powerful being who is still in control. Enter Jacob (OK, I’m admitting this is a maybe, but it’s fun…so hush).

“He is Evil Incarnate.” Those were the words of Dogen concerning MiB, Flocke, Unlocke, Smokey, or whatever you want to call that “thing.” It appears after last night’s episode, The Candidate, that he was right. From an emotional standpoint, last night was a 50 on a scale of 10! I was literally on the edge of my seat the entire show. Darlton proved once again that their story telling is genius! Their story telling is something else…it is real. This is what I believe makes LOST so freaking appealing. Here is what I mean.

Pastor Chris Seay really nailed it this week in my opinion. Comparing the journey our LOSTies have taken with the journey of the Exodus in the Old Testament. Two stories: one on the outside and one on the inside. The inner, introspective journey ends up being the one that is most important. Live together, die alone.

Uh oh…I feel another *facepalm* coming from da BOSS. Pastor Chris Seay shares what he liked about Everybody Loves Hugo and why it was not one of his favorite episodes of the season. *evil grin*

Ok, I have to admit, I was so excited I could have peed in my pants when I saw Widmore’s goons pull Desmond off the sub. I also have to admit that what follows in this post will probably not make sense, be cohesive, or flow in any kind of way. I don’t apologize. So here are my random thoughts:

Ever since THE INCIDENT I have wondered if perhaps Jacob had his own loophole waiting in the wings to one up the Man in Black.

We have known for a long time that whatever the rules are, they don’t apply to Desmond.

Maybe Desmond is Jacob’s loophole.

Maybe Jacob did in fact have Desmond in mind when he told Hurley someone was coming to the island.

Maybe Desmond IS #108, aka Wallace, from Jacob’s lighthouse.

Maybe Desmond really is Jacob’s candidate.

Maybe the others 4,8,15,16,23,42 aren’t really candidates at all, but rather are being used by Jacob as a “smokescreen” to hide what he is really up to thwarting the Man In Black (I know, you love the pun).

Did anyone notice the chapter of the Bible that Richard was reading in his dusty old prison cell? By now, I’m sure you have. It was Luke 4. Luke 4, Luke 4…that rings a bell somewhere…oh yeah, Doc Jensen said that in a way the entire series of LOST is like Luke 4. You can read about that here. I also have written about Luke 4 and it’s LOST connections here. While Doc focused on Jack’s addiction recovery and the “Physician, heal thyself” line of Luke 4:23 (two of the numbers), I focused on the beginning of Luke 4 and it’s emphasis on the temptation of Christ by Satan in the wilderness and it’s tie-ins theologically to the failure of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden back in Genesis 3. One thing was made clear in Ab Aeterno, there have been people “tested” on our island wilderness before, and they have all failed. that is assuming that Jacob telling Richard they were “all dead” counts as failing and I believe it does.

Allow me to make a few brief observations about Ab Aeterno and the Luke 4 connection to LOST.

Yes, that’s right, part one. There are SO MANY angles to look at from last night’s episode that I wanted to give at least three there own post throughout this week. @MLostie on twitter has me rummaging around in Revelation 9 and our very own Jon has me mulling over 2 Peter 2 and Jude (posts will probably be coming on both). I wanted first, however, to focus on a little nugget in the book of Job that I believe will get you thinking about the nature of the Man In Black and “the rules”. By the way, didn’t you love the way that Darlton adopted the fan name “Man in Black” for the Man in Black? First time we’ve actually heard him called that on the show as Jacob referred to him as that when he encountered “Don Quixote” Ricardo and then of course my new hero, Hurley, relayed to Richard that Isabella told him not to let the MIB of the island or they would all go to hell (that’s another post all in itself!).
