I loved LOST for the characters as much as the next guy, but I was LOST (and by that I mean a higher form of LOVE) for LOST when Desmond’s character started taking some strange trips through time. When the series came to an end I’ll admit that I was confused to the relevance to those trips. I was confused until I read Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut.

I enjoyed reading Watership Down and Lord of the Flies and I enjoyed discussing their parallels with LOST, but Slaughterhouse Five went beyond parallels and into a total enhancement of my LOST enjoyment. This has been a MUST read book, and I’m really looking forward to the podcast discussion with @jedimasterchief. We’re prepping some talking points, but I’d love to hear from you all everybody.

I really didn’t care for this book, mostly because I’m just not willing to take a trip quite that far from reality. It reminded me mostly of Desmond’s crazy trips through time, as you mentioned.

I think Vonnegut is trying to make the point that war is a crazy business, and in order to survive you have to let go a little bit of reality. As far as LOST is concerned, there’s a definite parallel. Those who worried all the time about the “real” world and getting rescued were useless in working on surviving in the here and now.

Then too, watching LOST was a lot like reading Slaughterhouse Five. We saw the reality–the island–as a framework (like the slaughterhouse) but we spent a lot of our time in the past (or in flash-sideways) seeing what got people there and what made them tick.

I definitely see the strong influence this book had on the writing and style of the series. Still, it was too disjointed to be enjoyable for me. Glad others liked it better!
