YAY! It’s time for MAIL BAG! [Where Amy finally gets off her tail and does the best she can to answer your questions about LOST!]

THIS EDITION OF MAIL BAG focuses on lingering questions after “The End.”  The finale left a lot of LOST fans scratching their heads (and/or CRYING their eyes out like ME).  The good news is with the finale over, all the puzzle pieces are FINALLY in the box. The better news is: if you are one of those fans determined to figure out what happened, you are in luck!  Team Rewatch here at LOSTblog is all about going BAAAAACK to the beginning and re-examining the entire show in context. Be sure to check out all our recaps, podcasts and LIVE chats each week!

This is a special edition of MAIL BAG is dedicated to answering excellent QUESTIONS from groovy LOST fan, Diane.  Her questions and my answers cover similar questions many of my lovely LOST readers have been posting over the past three weeks.  I’ll encourage all of you to read through them!

Diane wrote:

It’s me again, Amy. I’ve re-read your recaps and some of the other articles you’ve written about your theories, and they are very interesting.

Thank you very much! I’m glad you are enjoying them!

Did you come up with this on your own?

I didn’t start really digging into LOST until after the Season 3 finale (first flash forward), and even then, I spent very little time debating/discussion the show with other peeps on a regular basis.  I’m not the only fan (by FAR) who made a strong case that nothing on LOST taking place in a physical world well before the finale.  However, I’ve yet to find someone who syncs up 100% with what I’m doing, esp when we start getting into the Undershow — I’ll save that one for later! Unless I specifically note it, everything I post comes from my own head (disturbing, right?). All I can say is what I always say: I only follow the evidence.

Do most of the people on this site agree with your theory? Just asking.

Always feel free to ask questions!  We love it!  The simplest answer is: maybe.  LOSTblog was developed and set up to facilitate rewatch and post-finale activities, all based on the idea that this is supposed to be FUN. What’s so very cool about rewatch, and about LOSTblog in general, is that the guess work is over.  Now is the time to TEST our theories against the show as a whole.  Everyone on LOSTblog is very excited and really digging in, which I LOVE!  If you’ve explored other writers on the site and LOSTblog peeps’ discussions on our podcasts, then you know there’s a wide spectrum of theories about the show represented here.  Right now, we are all at the “maybe” stage.  For the most part what I’ve heard is — okay, so I can agree it’s not physically real (since the finale made that pretty darn clear), so where does that leave us?  Now is the time to ask more questions. The best way to do that is to start from scratch and work together. That’s what makes the show so cool in the first place!

Hopefully, you’ve also noticed that at LOSTblog we work very hard to keep our discussions friendly, fun and interesting without putting anyone down or making anyone feel “wrong” or “stupid” about their ideas.  LOSTblog is a hater-free zone *– ALWAYS!   So feel free to ask your questions — they are NOT stupid!

Did that answer your question?  All I’ll say for now is that it’s become a lot easier for other peeps on this site to “see” what I’m talking about. That is way cool in itself!

*FYI for all lovely LOST readers: Hater-free zone is exactly what it implies. Any and all opinions and constructive criticisms are welcomed here with open arms.  However, comments laced with insults, condescension and hurtful intent will be completely ignored and immediately deleted, regardless of subject or target (Team LOSTblog or other lovely LOST readers).  [Welcome to Rewatch, jerkies!!]

O.K. Here are a few questions. Please forgive me if they seem stupid, but I’m still trying to get my non scientific mind around this.

There are NO stupid questions when it comes to LOST!  And FYI: I’m an English Lit/Freshman Comp teacher! I’m right there with you!

DASH AND SMASH THE “FLASHES”

We’ve covered how the “flashsideways” work in a previous post.  I used events and visual effects in “Lighthouse” to demonstrate how Jack’s experiences with David directly inform or influence his revelation at Jacob’s lighthouse. That is, Jack’s journey is incomplete if you externally separate the episode into two storylines.

The basic premise is this:

Jack can’t see the house reflected in the lighthouse mirrors and (eventually – in “Dr. Linus”) call it “the house I grew up in” (instead of three different identifications: My house; the house I grew up in; I haven’t lived there since I was a kid), until he “sees” himself in David.

That is, when he sees David playing the piano at his audition, he understands that David is his mirror (the reflection of his identity).  He IS that uncertain, afraid, angry kid — just like David.  David “is” Jack.  [We know this because the camera work at that moment echos the camera work at the beginning of this episode when Jack is staring at himself in the reflecting pond at the temple.]

Jack IDENTIFIES with David. That’s the key event that leads him to tell Richard in “Dr. Linus” that he saw “the house I grew up in” reflected in the lighthouse mirrors.  Jack has made a choice, and that choice has put him on the path to complete the “something he has to do.”  This is the story of Jack’s walkabout. It’s the journey he must complete in order to, literally, get his head straight on the island.

In order for this walkabout to work, Jack’s “flashsideways” can’t take place in an “alternate universe” in the “real” world.

But, apparently, we need more proof.  So let’s take a look at Desmond.

SEASON 6 Recaps

RECAP MENU

Previously on LOST [6.08 “Recon” Recap PENDING]: Sorry about that!

My lovely LOST readers, you are in for a TREAT!  “Ab Aeterno” was CHOCK full of information.  It was like eating a huge wedge of REAL cheesecake after fasting for 2 weeks!  Whoof!  I’ll do what I can, but  to cover this episode best, the recap needs to be as meticulous and detailed as the episode itself.  In fact, I think this episode is so very important to solving the mysteries on LOST, that it’ll need to be covered with a recap and analysis – but in two separate posts.

The thing to remember about this recap is that MOST of what happens in Richard’s “flashsideways” is derivative. That is, we’ve heard many of the lines and seen lots of the imagery before. Also, watch the seamless flow between the guys on the beach and Illana’s chat with Jacob.

WATCH CAREFULLY!

DEAR SEASON 6 HATERS (And All You Other LOST Fans, Too),

Simple truth is this: The 6th Season of LOST is brilliant.  I mean BRILLIANT brilliant.  Like mythical. The stuff of legends.  It sets a new standard for the craft of visual storytelling that probably won’t be equaled in my lifetime.

If you consider yourself a true LOST fan, and you are unhappy or unsatisfied with Season 6, I got good news for you.  Season 6 is directly and explicitly explaining the BIGGEST MYSTERIES on LOST with every single episode.  You just have to peel back the glossy stick’em cover and press all the buttons first.  And you do that by putting down your assumptions and asking yourself:  What am I not seeing, and why am I not seeing it?

In order to do that, you need to know what the big mysteries ACTUALLY ARE. Ask the right questions, and you’ll find the answers–easily and without doubting yourself or the show.  But you have to look at the EVIDENCE.  Lucky for you, I am all about the evidence!  Go team!

QUESTION:  What are the “flash-sideways?”

WHAT YOU’RE MISSING:  How the flashbacks fit in the “given timeline” of our losties, and how they relate to what’s going on on the island.

EPISODE THAT’S GONNA GIVE US THE ANSWER:  ”Lighthouse” – In conjunction with “White Rabbit” (1.05) and “Something Nice Back Home” (4.10)

EASY CHEEZY, baby! You ready?

Good.

Let’s talk about JACK.  Specifically, lets talk about Jack’s Jacob-sponsored journey from the temple to the lighthouse (with Hurley as his “guide”), his “flashsideways” experience (where xJack reconciles with his grumpy, pre-teen, musical genius son, David), and his little dynamite experiment with Richard at the Black Rock.  But before we do all that, let’s examine LOST Episode 6.05 – “Lighthouse.”

Basic Premise of “Lighthouse” — Jack has a mirror problem.

SEASON 6 Recaps

RECAP MENU

Previously on LOST:   [6.06 - "Sundown" Recap Here] Oh my — things were not so good when we last left our losties.  LA_X:  Sayid visited Nadia.  Turns out she’s his sister-in-law (whoops!).  He flip-flopped around before finally crossing over to the dark side and killing Martin Keamy (for extorting/beating up his brother, Omar). He finds/rescues “No English” Jin.  TEMPLE:  Sayid flip-flopped around before finally crossing over to the dark side killing Dogen and Uber-Hippie (dumping them in the spring).  Clairuso crossed the line with Mock Locke’s message: “Join me or die.”  Kate returned to the temple and confessed to Clairuso.  Smokey attacked at sundown. Illana and Co. appeared outta nowhere, retrieved Miles and escaped just in the nick of time.  When the dust settled, Sayid, Clairuso and Kate stepped over the dead (who chose not to “join”) and followed Mock Locke away from the temple.

EXTREME WEIRDNESS TO WATCH FOR:  Okay, remember those patterns of white lights I’ve mentioned before?  I said they almost look like constellations? I didn’t mention that? Well, there have been instances of unusual and repeating patterns of STATIC dots or white, star-like dots, or whatever’s handy: manhole covers at an LA intersection, Ana Lucia’s shooting practice pattern – stuff like that.  So far in Season 6, these patterns are 1) becoming more and more frequent and obvious and 2) clearly mean something important.  Why? BECAUSE, with VERY few exceptions, THEY ARE ALL CREATED DIGITALLY and INSERTED POST-PRODUCTION.

I’m mentioning this now because these patterns/”constellations” occur a LOT during this episode (LA_X and On-Island), and I’ll be noting when and where I see them.  Sometimes they are hidden (like at night in the jungle) and sometimes they are NOT hidden.  And NO. I do not think these patterns actually represent constellations – that’s just what they LOOK like.  My best guess is that they are some kind of code because, although I’ve seen more than one pattern, the same pattern seems to repeat around certain characters.  The best name I could come up with them was Dot Code (because I KNOW if I stay “constellation,” everyone will start freaking out.  FYI:  The ONLY stars we EVER see on the island are in the sky at the Oceanic 815 CRASH SITE—and guess what? Even those stars are oddly and carefully manipulated).

New term to remember:  DOT CODE

Okay. Let’s go.

Begin Episode 6.07

JUNGLE

[NOTE: The last time we saw Ben he was fleeing the pool room.]

A terrified Ben barrels through the dark.  He looks back and runs faster. He trips and lands spread-eagle. He raises up and gasps, looking even MORE terrified for a moment.

Weirdness alert: camera movement here could be interpreted as something unseen, low to the ground closing in on him OR as if HE is moving closer to where the POV of the camera (“us”) originates.  What I think has happened here is that Ben has hit a “barrier,” and, after falling down, crosses through it, like moving from one bubble to another.  It works like this: one moment he’s on THAT side of the barrier – whoosh move by camera (with appropriate gasp and terrified expression on Ben’s face during the transition)  — then he’s on THIS side of the barrier – where Illana and co. are.  Ask yourself: Illana and co. are walking PARALLEL to Ben with LOTS of firelight.  Why couldn’t he see them until after this moment? Why couldn’t they hear him before this moment?

If you put THIS 10 sec sequence together with other pieces of the puzzle, like:

  • “Smokey’s POV island tour” sequence in “The Substitute” (right before Mock Locke cuts Richard down from the tree),
  • How Jack and Hurley end up at the caves and find the lighthouse in “the Lighthouse”

with

  • Jin’s fainting spell,
  • The “red shirts,”
  • The “constants” (like Shannon’s inhaler),
  • The underground temple wall weirdness (when they carry Sayid in on a stretcher),
  • The temple’s layout weirdness and
  • Clairuso’s crossing the line of ash action for Mock Locke –

Put all of those things together and maybe toss in, say, the island weirdness we’ve seen since Jacob died, and the more extensive island weirdness now that Dogen is dead, you’ll soon see that Season 6 has already spelled out EXACTLY:

  • What the island is,
  • How it works “geographically,”
  • Jacob’s and Dogen’s JOBS on the island,
  • What Mock Locke is up to,
  • What Jacob and Dogen are up to,
  • Why NO ONE’S gonna end up replacing Jacob, and
  • Why Mock Locke’s plan won’t work in the end.

[Cool, right?]

This would be why I’m so irked when fans bitch and moan about Season 6.  Team LOST just told us what the ISLAND IS!  Why are they complaining about it?!! ACK!

WHOA!  We got way off track there!  Let’s try that again.  [RESET!  HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!]
