Sayid episodes are never my favorite. He is just too violent. But I am happy that they balanced the torture out with the Island Open in this episode. These episodes just usually never do anything for me. But I did notice that we got a lot of heavy island history in this episode. I never

It's Lord of the Flies time in this episode of Lost. We get a little dirty in this one thanks to Sawyer. Nothing extremely creepy happens (unless you want to count Sawyer's hair in the flashback), but we get a taste of the characters here more.

This episode was so much different this time even though I just recently watched it during Season 6. While I mostly still agree with what I stated in that recap, I can really elaborate now that the series is over. Instead of watching the episode and taking it as a piece of the puzzle, I

This episode was so much different this time even though I just recently watched it during Season 6. While I mostly still agree with what I stated in that recap, I can really elaborate now that the series is over. Instead of watching the episode and taking it as a piece of the puzzle, I was able to see it this time as a mirror into the finale episode. There are just a few things I want to take up in this recap that are very important to me.
This was a Jack episode. It revealed a lot about him and really mirror imaged him in season 6. In his flashback we see him do two things. The first half of that flashback we see him trying to fix the wrong thing again (on and off island). Then his father gives him the “you don’t have what it takes” speech. This speech impacts his island experience. He is looked to as a leader, but is very reluctant to take it. He is broken because of this speech. Only until Hurley says “he has what it takes” in Lighthouse does he start fix himself and see that he can actually do what he is meant to do.
The second half of the flashback he is starting to clean up the mess he made with his father and then later deal with his death. This mirrors Jack’s entire flash sideways in my opinion. Maybe Jack was troubled by the fact that he never clean up the mess and that he never really got to bury his father properly. Maybe this is why his sideways was so focused on his father’s death and resolving the daddy issues with David. I have always thought that the sideways world was not only a place made to find each other, but it is also a place for them to feel nice and cozy before they finally transition. More on that later…
On island Jack is working through his “not having what it takes” by running around the jungle chasing his dead father. And I have a pretty crazy idea about Christian. Before I say this crazy idea I have, I need to say that this: since watching this episode, I have decided that I feel that the MIB/Smoke Monster never was a person. It never was Jacob’s brother, but Jacob created it. It is what it is…a monster. This monster has the ability to scan memories. It can impersonate dead people. It wants to destroy the island. That is all we know about it. Jacob’s brother was not given a name because it isn’t the Monster. Maybe Damon and Carlton did this as a giant clue into that.

I really enjoyed recapping this week’s episode. Be sure to look out for Amy’s Recap too! They are mind blowing! This was the episode of Lost that hooked me. Sure, the Pilot was amazing but this was the story that really took me over. I was drawn to Kate in the Pilot from the moment she sewed up Jack. She is my favorite character. And it was very interesting to learn her story. This flashback-type storytelling had never really been done before and it kind of amazed me when I realized that this was how the story was going to go.
Kate’s story was intriguing. You know she did something bad but you can also tell that she is a sweet and caring person. She doesn’t seem “dangerous” on the island and the fact that she gets caught because she was saving Ray (again, with the fake arm? haha) shows that she isn’t really some ruthless fugitive. I really liked how they presented the two sides, light and dark, within the characters. Really great storytelling. It was really cool to see this dark side of Kate. She was such a different person in the beginning than she was in the end. It seems like she really took what Jack said to her at the end of the episode to heart.
Jack: “Three days ago we all died. We should all be able to start over.”
Tabula Rasa: Latin – blank slate.

I have been looking forward to watching Walkabout during the hiatus in Season 6. During that week of no new Lost I watched Expose, A Stranger in Strange Land and White Rabbit. My re-watch of White Rabbit really provoked my interest in watching this episode because of the way Locke was acting. I’ll talk about that next time. For now, let’s go on this Walkabout.
The boar in the fuselage. I totally think that was MIB checking everything out. We have seen him do the same with Richard. Maybe this is what he does when new people arrive at the island. It may have been a random boar, but to me, this is a really cool idea. Also, toward the end of the episode MIB appeared as Christian. Again, just checking everything out. Similarly to MIB appearing as Isabella to Richard. I think I keep going back to Ab Aeterno because it is the only other episode we get to see people “accidentally” making their way to this island and interacting with Jacob and MIB.
“…but a Walkabout is a journey of spiritual renewal…” – Locke (to his evil boss)
I am going to go out on a limb and say something really out there. Could our Losties have been summoned to the island to go on their very own Walkabout? We all know they were broken and flawed individuals. Could this have been a place to “clean up their own mess?” If they aren’t able to do this they get stuck (like Michael) but if they are, they quickly leave the island soon after (dying or on a plane like Kate & Co.) After watching this episode, I totally think that this is their place for spiritual renewal. And Sideways Christian did say it was the most important time of their life. NOT purgatory, because they are all still alive and everything is very much real. Maybe the evil that everyone is afraid of is the destruction of the island and the idea that Lost souls will be unable to go through this spiritual renewal. They crash, they get a Tabula Rasa, and then they start on their Walkabout. Just a thought…
So, I can’t get through this recap without talking about Locke. And I am going to go out on another limb here and say that I totally think he had an encounter with MIB in this episode. I think Locke was scanned and MIB saw a pathetic and easily manipulated guy and decided that he would be his guy (MIB to Locke: “I’ll have you” haha!). I think that Locke sees “Jacob’s brother” in the jungle and that they form some type of relationship over the course of things, pumping Locke up as “special”. MIB then further manipulates Locke by appearing as Christian, making him move the island and so forth. I know this is something we will never know. But he did say he couldn’t catch that boar by himself. I just have to wonder if he had help.

Staying LOST After LOST by ErinAva: Rewatch/Recap Menus
Previously on LOST [Recap for 1.02 "Pilot, Part 2" HERE]: We added Sawyer to our list of known names [but not until he read "the letter" for the first time]. Locke spoke his very first lines [to Walt], through which we were given a big, fat, red herring theme [Good v. Evil] for the show. We also learned Walt’s mom died recently [and he's not to upset about it]. Claire felt the baby move for the first time since the crash. Our Transceiver Signal Posse [TSP] trekked to Mountain Meadow, but not before they kill a polar bear [Sawyer], and we [and maybe Kate] learn that Shrapnel Man is the marshal, and Kate was his handcuffed prisoner. TSP does get a signal, but it’s a looped distress call/message by a French woman that’s been playing for 16 years [according to Sayid's mental math].
Names of our losties we know so far: Jack, Kate, Charlie, Sayid, Boone, Shannon, Walt, Vincent and Sawyer. NOTE: We still don’t know ANYONE’S last name.
