Jack, Jacob & Christian (posted 7/22/2009)

This [edited] post is part of a LOST Rehab Theory I worked on after “The Incident” (LOST Season 5 finale).  I’m reposting part of it here because I think it’s necessary background info for  ”Lighthouse” (Ep. 6.06), the Jack-centered show which is now on of my FAVORITES because it is PERFECT in EVERY WAY!!

Background info on Jack and Christian is useful for my (forthcoming) analysis of “The Lighthouse.”  Enjoy!

Let’s take a closer look at JACK (of course, since he’s my FAVorite).

Recap:

Jack’s solo surgery hits a snag (that darn dural sack), and he starts to panic. Christian, standing nearby, tells him to calm down, count to 5 and “fix her, before I have to fix her for you.” After surgery, Jack berates his dad for humiliating him because “They think I got this residency because you’re my father,” and “I know you don’t believe in me, but I need them to.” Christian quips, “Maybe I’m not the one who doesn’t believe in you, Jack,” and toodles off with this coffee.

Then Jack encounters Jacob. Jacob is holding out TWO CANDY BARS at first, and then holds out ONE CANDY BAR to Jack, touching his fingers during the hand off. Jack toodles off, looking much happier and amazed (maybe chocolate makes everything better?).

Review:

This event is recounted by Jack to Kate as she sews him up right after the crash. The story becomes his testimony to her about how to deal with fear. His solution, to “let the fear in” but only for five seconds, is his own – no mention of Christian’s participation.

The primary reason put forth to explain the discrepancy is that Jack lied to Kate to calm her down, to impress her (not really necessary after the shirt comes off, I’d argue), to befriend her, or to maybe get a cult going. The problem with this is the lack of evidence that Jack would just randomly lie. In Season 1 especially, Jack is a nuts and bolts guy who never lies and gets really upset when others lie to him (Kate and Locke especially).

My Name is What

by Brandon on Jun.17, 2009, under Featured, Lost News & Analysis

My Name is What

A Rose by any other name still falls for Bernard. And yet, there exists a real power in tying identity to one’s moniker. Many cultures elevate names to lofty or even spiritualistic levels. Lewis Spence writes, “in many Australian tribes a man gives up his name for ever at the time when he undergoes initiation into the ceremonies which confer upon him the rights of manhood…New names are thus probably given at initiation, and carefully concealed for fear of sorcery.” He also reveals that “many Egyptians received two names – the ‘great’ name and the ‘little’ name, or the ‘true’ name and the ‘good’ name; the latter was that made public, but the ‘true’ or ‘great’ name was most carefully concealed.” In short, names are quite important.

Cuddly Pet...or Ravenous Beast?

Character Predictions: Smokie

We’ve seen the Smoke Monster chase and scan the living, kill, and take the form of the dead, but we’ve yet to discern a motive for the being’s behavior. We’ve been told by Rousseau and Ben that the Smoke Monster is a “security system,” though we’ve also seen the monster unable to pass the electromagnetic barrier surrounding the Dharma Initiative housing. It seems logical to conclude that the Dharma Initiative built the barrier as security against the security system, which would point to the Smoke Monster’s purpose being to protect the island from those who do not belong there, or do not respect it. However, if its purpose is to protect the island from outsiders, why does it continue to go after the people Jacob brought to the island? Perhaps the Smoke Monster is acting on the side of Jacob’s nemesis? Or perhaps the Smoke Monster is Jacob’s nemesis himself?

The coming war for the island will send multiple groups up in arms, but it is still unknown where the Smoke Monster’s loyalties lie. The fact that Ben has some control over it — that he can summon it at will — coupled with the fact that Jacob has paid no mind to Ben could be proof that the monster is working against Jacob. If this is the case, however, why does the monster never attack the Others, a group who has pledged loyalty to Jacob?

The monster’s secondary purpose seems to be judgment. It judged Eko, scanning his thoughts and memories, later to appear to him as his dead brother in an attempt to make Eko admit his sins and repent. When Eko would not concede the monster thrashed at him until he too was dead. It also took Rousseau’s crew, though it left them alive and changed, and almost caught Locke, Kate, Juliet, Jack, Sawyer and others throughout the course of the series. The monster most recently judged Ben in much the same way it judged Eko, but coming to a more favorable outcome. Ben gave in to the monster out of fear when it appeared as his daughter, Alex, and agreed to its demands: to do exactly what Locke tells him. This is more evidence that the Smoke Monster is on the side of Jacob’s nemesis. It could be possible the Others are not harmed by the monster the way the Losties and the Freighter people were because they had tamed the Smoke Monster. Maybe it was Jacob who helped them tame it, which is why he commands so much respect and fear.

On LOST. Reflections, Revelations, and Speculation After 5 Seasons.

by Jacob on Jun.05, 2009, under Featured, Lost News & Analysis

By Ben of WebCommoner.com

WARNING: This post contains LOST spoilers. If you have not watched the show through the final seconds of Season 5, it is strongly recommended that you turn back now.

“They’re coming.”That was the last line of special significance spoken by a character on LOST prior to Juliet’s screeching whimper as she pounded away at a stubborn nuclear reactor that Mr. Fix-It, Sayid, promised would detonate on impact. Apparently, all it took was some good old-fashioned elbow grease to make the thing act right, despite a compelling fall from grace. It’s a good thing she let go of Sawyer’s hand, and I guess those frustrated with the quadrilateral love connection can at least take comfort knowing it was a necessary plot twist that would pave a path towards their expulsion from 1977. I’ll certainly miss our cultish, psychedelic Dharma ladies and gents, but it’s time to move the story forward. Cue the fade to … white?

That’s right, Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof can’t take credit for pioneering the technique, but let’s at least pay homage to their use of a mere transition to advance the series into its final season, at the same time reminding us not to forget other television success stories that made excellent use of the effect, including the Sopranos and Six Feet Under. So, what does it all mean? We know for a fact that the creators of LOST have been dangling the black and white theme in front of our faces since John Locke first introduced Walt to the game of backgammon.

Lost: Living Up to It’s Name

by Jacob on May.19, 2009, under Lost News & Analysis

By Zac Turgeon

“Lost” has lived up to its name over the past five seasons by driving its viewers insane with curiousity over the twists and turns its plots make. Considering the show’s first episode was about a handful of plane crash survivors, and season five dealt primarily with time travel and getting back to the Island, the show has clearly taken some turns.
